Would you like it if you didn’t have to carry your identity card everywhere? Imagine a system where your fingerprint could authenticate your identity anywhere? Students from IES College of Technology, Bhopal, Aditya Aryan, Anand Saurabh and Anup Saurab have created an application that can identify you anywhere.

The application, Kawach, is a symbol of security and safety. It is intended to authenticate a person in real time and reduce malpractice. 

“Most people in India use fake identities for various purposes, For example, examination centres, hospitality industry, railways, job verification, rent agreements etc. The authorised person has no way to authenticate the identity of a person in real time. We want to reduce these frauds to make India more healthy and clean,” expressed the team, who are ardent fans of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

One of the main features of Kawach is its ability to scan the Quick Response (QR) code of an Aadhaar card. Then using just a biometric thumb impression a person’s identity can be verified. For the process of becoming a part of Kawach, a person would need to give their personal details, biometric information and government approved proof of identity. The team believes this will be particularly useful in emergencies. 

“If a person has an accident, it is difficult to identify them. However, if they’re already registered with Kawach, then with a thumb impression that person can be verified,” explained the team. “In India, a lot of homes are rented out. Landlords and tenants are taking the risk associating their homes with strangers. However, this application can help solve the issue and give the landlord as well as tenants a sense of security by authenticating their identity.”

Going paperless, real time authentication, reducing malpractice, and enabling emergency assistance, are just some of the advantages of this application. 

“We drew inspiration from our seniors who won Innovation Jockeys Season 4. We used Aadhaar API and after integrating the application we visited several market places and various colleges, and took feedback about how it will benefit the country and its users,” the team explained. “When we spoke with a few government officials we got to know that there is no way to validate a person. This gave us more confidence that we are on the right path and we can make a difference in the country.”

These youngsters believe that as engineers and citizens of the country, it’s their duty to identify problems and think of suitable solutions that will help society. "If the question is corruption, the answer is Kawach," the team chorused.
